Alot of debate about this topic, games like Tekken and SF seem to offer a bit more than others, but I want to know what everyone's opinion on this is or if there is a rule of thumb or what. I feel personally that Tekken should be a "No" and there should be no control-modding because it simply makes average players better than average and makes for easier combos and linkers while only putting out a fraction of the effort as the default player....particularly for King, Nina or other similar characters.
SF is a little different; SF has moves that are assigned w/ 3P and 3K buttons, so I believe w/ the added 2 buttons to the traditional 6, the player should now be allowed those 2 buttons, since the responses of tapping all 3 Punches or Kicks is so scattered and almost guaranteed to cost you the match if u are sitting there trying to do a move like that all match. I understand both sides and also would like to put it out there that I am an Arcade-player, so I already took a handicap by NOT being on a Stick, and previously never had a problem simultaneously pressing all 3 punches or kicks for a move w/ an ARCADE set-up and since I can use my FINGERS. Doing this w/ 2 thumbs is nearly impossible.
In MK, I change my Run and Block buttons or my Throw/Block buttons, that is all. I simply do not understand why Midway would make R1 throw and R2 block when block is used WAYYYYYY more than throw.
Soul Caliber I set R1 to block as well. MvC2 i switch the placement of my HK/HP buttons. so instead of them being above/below each other, they are side-by-side.
I gave you all the option of TWO choices, please explain your answers, thanks.

I use a stick, and I actually dont use mapped 3p or 3k buttons. Basically I play it like its a 6 button layout. However I dont think there is anything wrong with having 3p/3k buttons. But people who map these buttons to throw or focus attack or something like that are just.....fail. Oh and using turbo is just the ultimate way to proclaim yourself a scrub.
Good thread btw Eric.

Good thread btw Eric. check out the set-up for SFEX3 for example, which actually doesn't have ENOUGH buttons for all the commands: LP, MP, HP, LK, MK, HK, S.B (stun blow), throw, 3P, 3K, plus MORE.... in SFEX, throw is not F+FP(SF2) or F+2K/2P(SFA), but rather it's OWN assigned button, via default. 3P and 3K are not assigned via default, however as you progress through the game you come to find out that you NEED those buttons to perform certain attacks, Meteor Combos in particular. After conducting a study and playing SFA3 for the past week STRAIGHT w/ Litildave...lol....the ratio of actual success for moves that require 3P/3K manually is about 1/20, meaning you will waste around 19 efforts before successfully pulling it off on a controller. just some more info I wanted to share...lol

as far as street fighting games go i dont think its fair to change a button to 3 punch or 3 kick unless both players are playing that way. but if only one person makes that change they have an unfair advantage.

I feel that adding a 3p/3k button is against the nature of the game. We didn't have them at the arcade that I remember... Then again, I had most of the home ports. I learned early, i could pump quarters into a machine, or save them and play when I wanted. I do have to agree with Arez, some games the buttons are just in the wrong places.
Why is R2 block? I think thats simple enough bro... It's a bigger button. I have the real trigger mod on my DualShock3, and they are bigger yet still. (If you don't have these, get 'em. Gamestop under 5 bucks)
Fir example, in Soul Calibur, I like making R2 a secondary block button. So in case I forget what fighter I'm playing, I've got it there. (I sometimes will switch from Mk to SC and try to play the game wrong. LoL) Other than that, I leave my buttons mainly as default.

I only play Sf4 on PS3 with the controller, so for me all the buttons are fine the way they are. SF:AC for xbox 1 is fucked cuz I'm so use to they way SF4 buttons are layed out. Also, on SF:AC you can't map your buttons, so needless to say I bought that game for nothing. As far as 3p/3k you don't need to map them to one button. I do just fine on the ps3 controller and the xbox 360 controller before I got my stick. And if I can do it, anyone can do it.

You most certainly can map your buttons on SF:AC, but on my Xbox1, it already set up "Arcade-perfect" minus the Joystick (6 face-buttons) It's either in game, then save it, or go to the options once u select which game and it will save. I'm almost 100% positive of this.

IDK, everytime I've tried to map the shoulder buttons it didn't even show them on the controller screen. I'll have to check it again.

I'm pretty sure it's because the game was made for Xbox1 and those 2 buttons read as "White" and "Black" buttons on the menu screen. For 3rd Strike they can't be mapped DURING the match, but I'm pretty sure they can for SF2 they can, however, Options is always the very 1st thing I access in a game, then I set everything the way I like it, then set it to Auto-Save/Auto-Load so I never have to worry about it again.

MY INPUT ON THIS TOPIC IS QUITE SIMPLE.. IF A GAME GIVES YOU THE OPTION TO CHANGE UR BUTTON CONFIGURATIONS, THEN U SHOULDNT HAVE TO PLAY DEFAULT.. YES, WE KNOW THAT U CANT CHANGE BUTTON CONFIGS IN A TOURNY.. BUT FOR THE SAKE OF COMPETITION, U SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO SET UR BUTTONS THE WAY U LIKE TO GUARANTEE UR VICTORY..
FOR EXAMPLE.. ONE OF MY FAVORITE GAMES TO PLAY IS TEKKEN TAG FOR PS2. I USE L1(LP-RP), L2(LK-RK), R1(LP-RK), AND R2(LK-RP).. THIS CONFIGURATION IS A DESIGN SPECIALLY MADE FOR ME WHEN USING KING AND NINA WILLIAMS IN COMPETITION...
I AM A FIRM BELIEVER IN SETTING BUTTON CONFIGS ANY WAY A PERSON LIKES IF THAT PERSON FEELS COMFORTABLE DOING SO.. FOR THOSE WHO DONT... WELL.. MAYBE THATS THEIR ACE IN THE HOLE..
OH... AND WITH GAMES THAT REQUIRE 3P-3K .... GO FOR IT... I PERSONALLY DONT CARE FOR IT (FOR SF ANYWAY)

the whole point of not mapping buttons is for tourny play. If you're not serious or not coordinated enough, then fine, map your buttons. But if you think you might end up playing against people who are playing for real, learn how to play without mapping. We are supposed to be a clan trying to achieve high-level status, this won't happen when you try to question "rules" the high-level community already has in place.

I have to agree with you on this. We are supposed to be a clan trying to achieve high-level status, this won't happen when you try to question "rules" the high-level community already has in place. I don't think that anyone could say it any better. But please, someone do try! LoL!
